Bruno Zhu, Guts, 2019 | Photography by Jorge das Neves

His practice samples, manipulates and intersects anecdotes, consumer habits, television and fashion as a manifestation of frustrated affects. Found in a state of slumber at Laboratorio Chimico of the University of Coimbra, Zhu’s babies are surrounded by tools of personal use and hygiene that groom the newcomers for their daily routine. Manifesting a desire for reinvention, they suggest the corporeal in their materialist aggregation. They demonstrate a mechanical extension of the human dimension, grasping the human body as a sentimental and technological being. By letting materials becoming uncanny reflections of themselves, Zhu suggests a politics of representation in evasion, and a rhetoric grounded in refusal.
