Steve McQueen, Once Upon a Time, 2002 | Fotografia de Jorge das Neves

Steve McQueen is an artist and filmmaker. Along his path, his sculptures and installation work have been increasingly overlooked in relation to his films, from the author’s short films, benchmarks in the history of art (Deadpan, 1997; Giardini, 2009), to the films produced and awarded in Hollywood (Hunger, 2008; 12 Years a Slave, 2013). Once Upon a Time (2002) is a sequence file of 116 photographic images that NASA sent into space in 1977 aboard the unmanned spacecraft Voyager 2, coupled here with an original McQueen soundtrack constructed from voices speaking unknown languages. Voyager 2’s mission has no specific destination, and the iconographic content it carries serves as an optimistic time capsule: a collection of images depicting life on Earth, idyllically narrated to extraterrestrials as being devoid of poverty, conflict or disease, still waiting to be found to this day.
